President Trump ripped “sleazebag journalists” for saying his comment to Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. at Tuesday’s address to a joint session of Congress meant more than it did.
“The Fake ‘Play the Ref’ News, in order to create a divide between me and our great U.S. Supreme Court, heard me say last night, loudly and openly as I was walking past the Justices on the way to the podium, ‘thank you,’ to Chief Justice John Roberts,” Mr. Trump posted Wednesday on Truth Social.
Mr. Trump greeted the Supreme Court justices in the House chamber, shaking their hands and saying, “Thank you,” but when he got to Justice Roberts, he’s heard saying, “Thank you again. Thank you again. Won’t forget it.” He also patted him on the back and shoulder.
“Like most people, I don’t watch Fake News CNN or MSDNC, but I understand they are going ‘crazy’ asking what is it that I was thanking Justice Roberts for? They never called my office to ask, of course, but if they had I would have told these sleazebag ‘journalists’ that I thanked him for swearing me in on inauguration day, and doing a really good job in so doing!” he wrote, finishing the statement, “THE FAKE NEWS NEVER QUITS!”
Left-leaning media questioned what the president could’ve been thanking the chief justice for. One MSNBC “Deadline” story said maybe Mr. Trump was thanking Justice Roberts for the “Trump-friendly court rulings” or the decision from the high court that presidents have a certain level of immunity.
The Atlantic called the exchange “awkward” and also wrote that the president might have been thanking him for his part in rulings that forced states to keep him on the November ballot despite his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and for saying presidents have some immunity.
Justice Roberts has served on the Supreme Court since 2005, so he’s not one of the justices Mr. Trump picked during his first administration. The three he chose are Neil M. Gorsuch, Brett M. Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.
