President Trump lavished praise on Senate Republicans at a White House dinner Friday, predicting the legislative victories they helped him accomplish set the party up for wins in the midterm elections next year.

Mr. Trump said legislative wins like the One Big Beautiful Bill, coupled with his domestic and foreign policy successes, will give Republicans momentum to make history by keeping control of Congress.

“I don’t understand why they say that when you win the presidency, you always, almost automatically lose the midterms, because nobody’s had a more successful period of time than we have,” he told the senators at the dinner. “So based on that, we should do great.”

“I don’t think anybody’s ever come close to doing this with a pretty tight majority, to put it nicely,” the president said. “I think we have a chance in the midterms.”

For Democrats to flip the Senate, they need a net gain of four seats next year. There are also a few pick-up opportunities for Democrats. Just two of the 22 GOP seats up for grabs next year are in states Mr. Trump either lost or won by less than 10 points in 2024.

The president has urged Texas Republicans, who control their state legislature, to help the House GOP expand its majority by about five seats through redrawing the state’s congressional map in Republicans’ favor.

In response, California Democrats, who have supermajorities in their legislature, are threatening to redraw the state’s congressional map to cancel out any gains the GOP in Texas.

Still, Mr. Trump sounded confident Friday that Republicans would prevail in 2026 and keep the majorities in the House and Senate.

“We achieved more in six months than almost any administration could accomplish in eight years, and we did a lot of good,” he said, adding that they stopped “a lot of wars,” including the ending conflicts between India and Pakistan and between Congo and Rwanda.

“We got it through trade. We said, ‘You guys want to make a trade deal. We’re not making a trade deal if you’re going to be throwing around weapons,’” he said.

He also touted the successful U.S. strike that took out three key Iranian nuclear facilities.

A series of legislative wins were capped Friday with Mr. Trump signing the Genius Act, a landmark regulatory framework for cryptocurrency.

The biggest win came two weeks ago with the signing of his One Big Beautiful Bill, the centerpiece of Mr. Trump’s agenda that cut taxes and enacted major policy moves.

The new law includes making permanent his 2017 tax cuts and removing taxes from most tips, overtime pay and retirement benefits.
