President Trump concluded a high-stakes phone call Tuesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a possible 30-day ceasefire to end the war in Ukraine, an administration official said.
The call began at 10 a.m. and lasted about 90 minutes, according to the official, who did not provide details of the conversation.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino earlier said the call was “going well.”
“Happening Now — President Trump is currently in the Oval Office speaking with President Vladimir Putin of Russia since 10:00 am EDT. The call is going well, and is still in progress,” Mr. Scavino posted on X at 11 a.m.
Mr. Putin was expected to make the case for his demands to pause fighting in Ukraine, which included halting all weapons shipments to Ukraine.
Last week, Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire, putting pressure on Mr. Putin to pause the fighting. So far, he has balked at the U.S. proposal, citing “nuances” that could sink the deal. He has suggested roadblocks could include Ukraine receiving U.S. military aid or mobilizing new forces.
Mr. Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday night that Ukraine could compromise with Russia too. He said that there was “a very good chance of reaching a deal” and the conversation would focus on “dividing up assets.”
“We will be talking about power plants,” Mr. Trump said. “I think a lot of it has already been discussed at length by both sides, Ukraine and Russia.”
“We want to see if we can bring that war to an end. Maybe we can, maybe we can’t, but I think we have a very good chance,” he said.
Ukraine has already accepted the ceasefire proposal, which led Washington to restart military aid and intelligence sharing after a brief breakdown in ties following a heated conversation between Mr. Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House last month.
