Senate panel reviews early report on deadly plane, helicopter crash near Reagan National Airport

A Senate subcommittee on Thursday is scheduled to review a preliminary report into the Jan. 29 midair collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport that killed 67 people.

Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board, which produced the report; the Federal Aviation Administration; and the Army are expected to testify about the crash that occurred when a Black Hawk helicopter collided with an American Airlines passenger jet as it approached the airport.

Officials said the 64 people aboard the commercial jet arriving from Wichita, Kansas, and the three-man crew on the Black Hawk, died in the collision over the Potomac River.

The hearing is slated to begin at 10 a.m. and will be followed by a press conference held by family members of those who were killed in the crash.
