Reuters poll finds Trump's approval rating under water after first month

President Trump is underwater with voters after his first month in office, a Reuters/Ipsos poll has found.

The poll, released Tuesday, revealed that 44% of Americans approve of Mr. Trump’s job performance versus 50% who disapprove. That’s relatively unchanged from last week.

The poll found that 41% like Mr. Trump’s handling of the economy, with 34% happy with how Mr. Trump is addressing the cost of living. It also revealed that 38% of respondents have a favorable view of Elon Musk, the tech billionaire leading the Department of Government Efficiency, while 57% view him unfavorably.

Half of the respondents support Mr. Trump’s immigration plan. That represents a slight improvement from last week’s survey, the poll said. In contrast, 42% of Americans are against his immigration agenda.

Mr. Trump’s approval rating is much higher than President Joseph R. Biden’s rating when he left office last month. He finished his term with a 37% approval rating and 57% disapproval, according to data from FiveThirtyEight.

The latest numbers are an improvement over Mr. Trump’s first-term ratings. In 2021, he left office with 39% backing him and 59% against.

Mr. Trump has fared better in other recent polls. A Harvard CAPS/Harris survey found the president’s first-month rating was 52% up and 43% down.

A CNN poll last week found that 47% of Americans approved of Mr. Trump’s job performance versus 52% with a negative view.

The Reuters/Ipsos survey was conducted from Feb. 21-23 among 1,029 U.S. adults, and its margin of error is 3 percentage points.
