Police have charged a Massachusetts man after authorities said he traveled to the U.S. Capitol with knives and Molotov cocktails intending to kill Republican leaders whom he referred to as “Nazis.”
Charging documents said Ryan “Reilly” Michael English, 24, turned himself in Monday to Capitol Police after he admitted to wanting to “kill Scott Bessent,” the newly confirmed Treasury Secretary, as well as hunting down “Nazi” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Mr. English further told police he wanted to burn down the building belonging to the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation, according to the filing.
“These actions were specifically to ’depose’ these political offices and send a message,” police wrote in the affidavit.
Mr. English told officers he planned to either throw a Molotov cocktail at Mr. Bessent’s feet, or stab him if he got close enough, the filing said.
Officers searched the suspect and found a folding knife, two Molotov cocktails and a lighter on him, court documents said.
Mr. English then told police he had additional Molotov cocktails in his car, parked in the 900 block of Independence Avenue Southwest, which officers seized after a brief search.
Police said they found a note Mr. English wrote in his back pocket while searching him at the Capitol.
“Judith dear god I am so sorry. You must understand I can feel myself dying slowly b/c of my heart. This is terrible but I cant do nothing while nazis kill my sisters,” the note read, according to court documents.
“I love you. This is awful. Im so sorry. I love u,” the note stated. “Please stay alive and heal. you can. you are strong enough. F— them for pushing us so far. you dont deserve this. Im so sorry for lying and plotting and lying. Please survive [7 hearts].”
Mr. English was taken into custody on weapons possession and explosive device charges, as well as unlawful receipt.
