Google Maps will be using President Trump’s new names, including the Gulf of America, once the U.S. Geological Survey’s Geographic Names Information System is updated.
The GNIS currently lists the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska’s Denali, which will change to Mount McKinley. The Interior Department announced the name updates Friday as a move “honoring American greatness.”
“We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources. … When that happens, we will update Google Maps in the U.S. quickly to show Mount McKinley and Gulf of America,” Google wrote on X Monday.
The GNIS updates domestic name data every other month.
While Gulf of America is a new term for the body of water that was first called by its other name on a 1550 map, the mountain was officially called Mount McKinley from 1917 until 2015 when it was changed to the indigenous Denali by the Obama administration.
The Interior Department’s release called the 2015 change “an affront to President McKinley’s life, his achievements and his sacrifice.”
Google also explained that, in cases where countries have different names for the same geographical feature, a user will see the name used in their country, while foreigners outside applicable countries see both names.
For example, the Sea of Japan bordering Japan, Russia and South Korea is also shown as the East Sea, the name used in South Korea, and the Google Maps listing for the Rio Grande also shows its Mexican name, the Rio Bravo.
