As the bank holiday weekend comes to an end, Britons need something to look forward to - and what better to raise our spirits than discounted chocolate?

Social media has been flooded with tips, jokes, and memes, as bargain-hunters rush out to the shops in search of reduced Easter goodies.

While some people struck gold and found eggs for as little as 35p, others were left bitterly disappointed after being met with empty shelves.

One X user (previously Twitter), joked: 'Me waiting for shops to reduce their Easter eggs to 50p each,' with a second writing: 'It's discounted Easter egg day and I feel sick'.

'Happy discounted Easter egg day!' celebrated another, while someone else questioned: 'Alright, where are all my discounted easter egg hunters at? Where's the bargains at?'

One user gushed: 'Small Easter eggs reduced to 60p in Asda (Max 6 per customer). Includes Buttons, Smarties, KitKat and Character eggs too!'

And Morrisons seems to be a popular option, as another customer managed to spot larger versions of the gold bunny eggs which were slashed from from £12 to £1.25

Meanwhile, someone else posted into the group 'Feed your family for about £20 a week' that there are small eggs being flogged for 60p each in Asda - including Mini Eggs, Freddo, Milky Bar, and Caramel Nibbles

One savvy shopper took to Facebook to announce they bagged a Lindt gold bunny egg in Morrisons for 35p, discounted from £3.

They penned: 'Found these in Morrisons this morning for 35p each, 120g so a good size too.'

Sharing their discovery in the Facebook group, Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK, they revealed that they snapped up a whopping 16 of the chocolate goodies - but not everyone was happy about it.

One commenter called her 'greedy' and another quipped: 'Why don’t you leave it for other people - why have you got a buy 16?'

One bargain fan announced: 'Easter Chocolate and Sweets reduced to clear at Aldi,' with an assortment of easter lollies, eggs, and snacks all with slashed prices.

According to the post, the Specially Selected Ruby & Raspberry Geometric egg and the Specially Selected Blonde & Feuilletine egg are both reduced to £1.75 from £3.49.

Galaxy Truffle Mini Eggs are going for 59p a pop and Aldi's own brand mini chocolate eggs are priced at 49p per packet.

Another shopper shared images of the Tesco reduced to clear eggs they stumbled across in Llandudno Junction, and insisted there is a 'national reduction where stock is left'.

Five-packs of Creme Eggs are priced at £1.25, when they are usually £2.50 - Mini Eggs are £1.12 and the Lindor extra-large eggs are £7.50, down from £12.

Someone else shared their haul of a Terry's Chocolate Orange egg and a KitKat Chunky egg that they snapped up from their local petrol station for £1 each, discounted from £5.

However, this year a lot of chocolate fans were not happy with the selection, with some claiming they didn't manage to find anything that wasn't full price.

One annoyed user wrote: 'Called at local Tesco on way to chip shop. Not a single reduced-price Easter egg. Not even a mini one. Nor any choc bunnies.'

A second added: 'Went into Tesco to get reduced Easter eggs and they had NONE!!,' alongside crying emojis.

Meanwhile, a third penned: 'I didn't buy any reduced Easter eggs. All the ones I saw today were still full price.'

A fourth questioned: 'Where are all the easter eggs gone? Usually have lots left over and reduced after Easter but none in Sainsbury's or Tesco.'

Others remarked: 'I am bitterly disappointed by the fact that the Easter eggs in Tesco are not at all reduced in price!' and 'Are reduced Easter Eggs still a thing?'

It comes just after the news that Britain's biggest chocolate firms have secretly shrunk the nation's most popular Easter treats.

Brands such as Cadbury, Galaxy, Mars, Twix, KitKat, Smarties, Yorkie, Terrys and Lindt are all involved.

And in the latest example of shrinkflation, prices have not been cut to match the smaller size, while some have even gone up.

Some of the products drawn into what amounts to the Great Easter Egg Robbery even include a number described as 'large' or 'family size'.

For example, the large Mars milk chocolate egg is down from 252g to 201g, a reduction of 20 per cent, yet the price has remained the same at £3.

The Twix milk chocolate Easter egg is down from 246g to 200g and the Galaxy Minstrels Easter Egg has been cut from 234g to 192g. Both are also made by Mars.
