House Speaker Michael Johnson said Sunday he is praying for the victims and families affected by flash flooding in Central Texas.
Mr. Johnson, Louisiana Republican, said that “every available resource has been deployed” to the area and that Congress likely, over time, will take up a supplemental spending request.
“At a moment like this, we feel just as helpless as everyone else does,” Mr. Johnson said on “Fox News Sunday.” “It touches so many families, and all we know to do at this moment is pray.”
The flash flooding on the Guadalupe River has killed at least 52 people, including 15 children. There are still more than two dozen children missing from Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp.
Rescuers continued searching the river over the weekend.
President Trump said Saturday that state and local officials are on the ground. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited the area and said the administration is focused on upgrading the nation’s weather alert system in the hopes of preventing similar tragedies in the future.
“Melania and I are praying for all of the families impacted by this horrible tragedy,” Mr. Trump posted Saturday on Truth Social.” Our Brave First Responders are on site doing what they do best.”
On Sunday, Mr. Johnson said Mr. Trump is “dialed in” on the situation.
“Right now, they are still trying to do rescue and recovery, and our hearts go out to all of them,” the House speaker said.
